Hudgins Family PapersIn the fall of 1951, the Old House at “River View”, near Cricket Hill, Mathews County, Virginia, on Chesapeake Bay was torn down. In the attic was found a trunk of old letters, accounts, account books, deeds and other documents dating back to the early part of the nineteenth century. After the death of Miss Rowena Hudgins in 1955, the remaining family letters and documents were turned over to the custody of William Raymond and Virginia Thompson (Postles) Thomas. The documents were transcribed by William Raymond Thomas, MD and his wife, Virginia Thompson (Postles) Thomas by typing and many were photographed. These are presented as Hudgins Family Papers Volumes I-V. With the advent of computers and electronic scanning, these original documents were digitized in 2024 and are presented in separate appendices associated with each volume. The documents and letters describe the life and times of the Braxton and Hudgins families, descendants of the Declaration of Independence Signer Carter Braxton, in ante-bellum Virginia, during the Civil War, and in the Reconstruction and “Jim Crow” eras.
