- Hibiscus schizopetalus is a species native to tropical eastern Africa, specifically Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique. It is a member of the Malvaceae family, which also includes other hibiscus varieties. Its unique flower form and growth habit make it a popular choice for gardens and landscaping in tropical and subtropical climates, and it can also be grown in containers in cooler regions to be brought indoors during winter.
- Hibiscus schizopetalus, commonly known as the Japanese Lantern, Fringed Hibiscus, or Coral Hibiscus, is a tough, fast-growing evergreen shrub with an upright, somewhat open habit and gracefully arching branches. It is a stunning ornamental plant due to its delicate, pendant flowers that hang from long stems, resembling Japanese lanterns. The deeply divided, frilly petals are typically bright red or pink.
- Care: When plants are mature and ready to be set out, plant in fertile, well-draining, acidic soil; water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, feed a good-quality, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in the Spring.
