Wild Quinine has medicinal uses, but it is also widely used in native prairie restorations because it is a native plant. The tall, sturdy perennial bears white flower clusters with an herby scent, which is loved by all types of pollinators. During World War I, this plant provided an alternate source for the quinine necessary to cure malaria and other diseases. It also has a long history as a medicinal remedy for Native American tribes and early settlers, who used it to treat fever, burns, and dysentery. The genus name "Parthenium" comes from the Greek word for "virgin," referring to the sterile part of the flower. The species name "integrifolium" refers to the toothed edges of the leaves.
